HOW TO KEEP YOURSELF CLEAN, SHARP, AND PUT TOGETHER
PUBLISHED: APRIL 3, 2019
Grooming is a tool, not vanity.
Grooming isn’t just about looking good. It’s about showing up. It’s about self-respect. It’s about the message you send without saying a word. When you keep yourself clean, sharp, and put-together, the world treats you differently — and more importantly, you feel different about yourself.
Let’s be real: as a Black man, you already walk into rooms where people form opinions about you in seconds. But when you walk in clean-cut, fresh, and confident, you control the narrative. Grooming is a tool — not vanity. It's how you present your power.
Start with the basics: regular haircuts, clean facial hair, trimmed nails, and healthy skin. These aren’t luxuries — they’re essentials. If you’re bald, keep that head clean and smooth.
Your beard (if you rock one) should be lined up, moisturized, and maintained. A beard is a statement — but only if it's shaped, lined, and maintained. Too many men either overgrow their beards with no shape or over-shave trying
You might have the sharpest cut on the block, but if stray hairs are peeking out of your nose, ears, or the back of your neck, it throws off the whole look. These are small areas, but they make a big difference.
Add grooming tools like a nose trimmer or edge razor to your toolkit. Check your neck and hairline every few days and clean it up between barber visits. Stay on top of those small areas — they speak volumes about your attention to detail.
You can have a fresh cut and clean shoes — but if your nails are dirty, your breath is off, or your elbows are ashy, you’re dropping the ball. These little things speak loud.
Clip and clean your nails weekly. Brush, floss, and use mouthwash. Keep lotion handy — dry skin shows on knuckles, knees, and elbows first. And choose a clean, subtle cologne that fits your vibe.
Grooming is also mental. When you take time to take care of yourself, it builds confidence. You walk taller, speak clearer, and move with purpose. You’re telling the world — and yourself — that you’re worthy of excellence.
This isn’t about impressing others. It’s about commanding respect. From your hairline to your heel, how you maintain yourself reflects how you value yourself. So trim the beard, shine the shoes, moisturize the skin, and hold your head high. Grooming isn’t extra — it’s standard. It’s part of how kings carry themselves. And you, my brother, are a king.

to fix it and cause irritation or patches. The result? Messy or unhealthy facial hair.
Your skin deserves care — use products that work for your skin type, especially if you’re dealing with razor bumps, dryness, or acne. A lot of Black men still think washing with bar soap and water is enough. It’s not. That approach leaves your skin dry, dull, and prone to bumps, razor burn, or acne. And because melanin-rich skin is prone to hyperpigmentation, neglect just makes it worse.
Use a proper facial cleanser (not body soap), moisturize daily, and exfoliate 2–3 times a week. Choose products made for your skin type and tone. And yes — wear sunscreen. Your skin deserves the same strength you put into your body.
